Explaining the enormous popularity of luxury vinyl
Luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) is a trend today because you'd be hard-pressed to find something that offers so much value for the decorating dollar. It's got a high-end style and is 100% waterproof, durable, easy to care for, and has a simple installation. With true-to-life images of wood, stone, and tile, LVF dovetails on another trend, that of wood-look flooring.
Now you can have the look of wood anywhere
One of the great design options of LVF is that the material can be cut into planks or groutable squares. With the vinyl plank, the material is cut into strips and mounted on boards to mimic hardwood and is so realistic sometimes even the flooring experts have difficulty telling that from the real thing. The squares echo marble, granite, and other stones, as well as ceramic tiles.
Micro beveling and embossing add depth, design, and textured looks, such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered, and distressed. Since the floors are waterproof, they can be installed in wet areas like bathrooms and leak-prone kitchens, but the high-end design makes it suitable for living and dining areas, bedrooms, and hallways. We even see it in some homes where once nothing but genuine materials would be considered.
Let's talk about ceramic tile mimics. These pieces can be mixed and matched to create your distinctive design, whether you want a colorful retro-style playroom or a glamorous encaustic-style bathroom floor. Many use grout, which is considered a design tool and available in many colors. The extra seams add even more to the realism.

Authentic luxury vinyl is thicker
Whatever color you choose should harmonize with your overall decor, but also think about things like plank width or whether you want domestic or exotic wood. Harvested within North America, domestics tend to be warmer and more traditional. Some, like white oak or hickory, are harder than others. Exotic woods are harvested from Brazil, Indonesia, Africa, and Southeast Asia and are all very hard, dark, and dramatic.
Do you want pre-finished (factory) floors or on-site finishing?
While all vinyl flooring is durable, the luxury version is five times thicker than the original sheet. This multi-layered vinyl should measure at least 8-mm (preferably more) and comes with a clear, strong melamine top coating that guards the surface against scratches and scuffs. This wear layer is a separate measurement and should be thick.
All it needs is a regular sweeping and a periodic mopping with a manufacturer-approved cleaner. Avoid waxy, shine-promoting products as they can damage the finish and dull the floor. Instead, installation can be a floating floor where the pieces click together and mat, then hover over the subfloor without nails or glue.
